Did you know that brushing alone misses 75% of your mouth? That statistic alone is staggering.
Oral disease has become the #1 chronic childhood disease. Dental disease can lead to serious illnesses and affects a child’s overall well-being. A child in pain can’t eat the nutritious foods that are so important for their growth and development.
A few stats:
• 44 percent of American kids will suffer from pediatric dental disease before they reach kindergarten
• Of the 4 million kids born each year, more than half will have cavities by the time they reach 2nd grade
• 43% of Americans lack dental insurance
• All in all, 16 million kids suffer from untreated dental disease
Listerine has partnered with the National Children’s Oral Health Foundation, also known as America’s ToothFairy, for the third year in a row to help raise awareness and commitment from us to help eliminate pediatric oral disease.
We are big into brushing our teeth around here but I also admit that other than that we don’t do much else with the kids. They don’t use mouthwash and we are not adamant about flossing with them. But after learning so much about oral disease in children, we are going to spend the next three weeks focusing on better oral care for everyone in the family.
So even though Halloween and the holidays are coming up I know that we can Sweet Smart with the help of Listerine Kids.
We have started singing the ABC’s through twice while brushing and now we are going to add flossing once a day and rinsing with mouthwash twice a day. Using the dry erase calendar we are going to keep track of our flossing and rinsing habits. I am still trying to come up with some rewards for good oral care habits.
No matter what the rewards may be, I am looking forward to helping my children establish better habits when it comes to caring for their teeth. Stay tuned in the next few weeks for an update on how we were able to Sweet Smart with the help of Listerine.
