I have admitted before that I am not a baker. I can cook. But I can’t bake. It took me about 5 years to finally get homemade bread down. Homemade cake I still can’t get the hang of. So when Duncan Hines contacted me about checking out their brand new Spring Velvet cake mix, I of course said yes.
Consumers have embraced the colored velvet trend, and Duncan Hines is thrilled to bring this spring-inspired colored velvet to home bakers with a fun, easy mix that takes the science and guesswork out of baking so bakers can focus on baking magical moments with their loved ones.
The cake was easy to make. Two separate mixes, one yellow and one pink. Instead of oil though it uses butter which makes for a more dense cake. Had I realized that, I may have gotten more adventurous. I think this cake would hold up very well to cutting and crumb icing than your typical box mix.
To celebrate spring we made this cake for Easter. Simple vanilla icing topped it off. We crushed some Robin’s Egg candy and used it around the edge. It was pretty and so good.
And the two colors added a festive touch that was perfect for spring.
Besides the Spring Velvets, Duncan Hines also sent over their Summer Pink and Blue Velvet cake mixes. I’m sorry to say I have not had a chance to try them yet but I am already thinking up a few ideas to make something a little more fun than just the normal box directions.
They also sent their new Salted Caramel Brownie mix.
Um, they were amazing! Perfect pair of sweet with just the right amount of salt. I love all things salted caramel and these brownies do not disappoint.
One thing I appreciated the most was that the icing contains no high fructose corn syrup. I noticed a couple weeks at the grocery store that Duncan Hines is the only brand that does this. I appreciate it and it has ensured I have become very brand loyal.
