As a homeschooling mom I am always looking for tricks and tools that can help make my job a little easier. My 9 year old is now reading and doing a lot more independent work so it was the perfect time to start formally teaching the almost 5 year old.
I figured out right away that she does not learn the same way as her brother. She knows her colors, her shapes, her numbers. She can count to 20 and sing her ABC’s. But when it comes to letter recognition, she is just not getting it. I know it will come but until then we are looking for ways that can help.
So when the opportunity presented itself to try out a new app that can teach her to read, I was all for it.
Learn With Homer is a fun and interactive app that starts out with the very basics. The first lessons focus on the letter A, both upper and lower case and asks your child to recognize them. Once this is mastered the app moves on to the short A sound and has your child pick out words that both start with the short a sound and contain it in the middle. Thing easy words like mat, ant, alligator.
The app then builds on this with fun activities and stories. It even includes sight words.
Learn With Homer starts off by teaching the sounds to a letter. Once your child has mastered the sounds of each letter, Learn with Homer starts to guide them in putting the sounds together to form words. Learn With Homer helps your child to master learning and reading and then shows your child how to read between the lines by moving from literal to figurative lessons.
We have been using this app for two weeks now and I am letting her focus on the first few letters. Right now we have only done A and T. However, in this short time I have seen her recognition of those letters increase.
One of my favorite things about the app is that it is not all just lessons. At least to a child. As a mom I know that every game she plays in the app, every story she has read to her, and every drawing she does, it is just reinforcing what was already taught.
And the look on her face when it tells her she got something right, or just read a word is priceless.
Right now you can get your first month free of the app. Check it out and give it a try. If you love it, and I am sure you will, you can save 50% off your first year subscription. Just use this link or enter promo code BLOG2XOUU at check out.
This is hands down my new favorite app to use in our school day. Learn with Homer has got her excited about learning and I don’t keep hearing “I don’t know” or “I can’t do it”. Instead I am asked multiple times a day if she can do another lesson. Learn With Homer is fun and engaging.
