PlayMG Gaming System. I am so going to be the cool Mom this Christmas!

You may remember a few months ago I did a post on the new PlayMG game system. I was selected to actually review this fun little thing and now I get to tell you all about it.

Genghis doesn’t know it yet but he is getting the PlayMG for Christmas. After setting it up and playing with it for a couple of days, I am sure he is going to love it.

What is the MG?

MG (more game) is the first dedicated portable Wi-Fi gaming system for the massive 60,000-plus Android freemium app games market. MG eliminates the need for packaged games or expensive data plans that come with smartphones, and caters to the 63 million kids under 18 years, 39 million of which, do not yet have smartphones. With MG, kids get to enter the world of freemium Wi-Fi App gaming while parents can safely and affordably give it to them. And finally, we parents won’t have to share any more and can reclaim our tablets and smartphones.

Being the owner of an Android phone, I was already familiar with the basic set up and workings of the MG. And the PlayMG is loaded with everything a child could want or need. Of course there is no cell phone capabilities with this device but I was not looking to hand my 6 year old a cell phone. Being Android based you will need a Google account to set up the MG. Once set up you can purchase music, books, magazines, movies and of course apps through Play Store.

The MG also has a 1.3-megapixel front-facing camera used for facial recognition features. Music can be downloaded from the Play Store, copied from your computer onto the MG, or uploaded from 20,000 plus songs from Google Play. And my favorite feature is the MG comes equipped with an e-reader for easy downloads of books.

As long as you have a Wi-Fi connection you can browse the internet with the MG. It connect quickly and the browser is easy to use. The PlayMG also comes with a calculator, calendar, email, clock and lots of other apps.

By using the Play Store you can search for music, movies, books, games, and anything else you may want to add. You can search by Top apps or even Top Free apps to see which are most popular.

MG Digital Wallet

Handing over anything with the potential to buy games and apps is never a great idea when it comes to little ones. MG thought this through with All MG’s come with a card that you can activate and is pre-paid so your child can never go hog wild when buying apps. Right now if you add $10 to the Spendsmart card PlayMG will match it giving you $20 to spend.

Family Collaboration System

The Family Collaboration System gives you weekly emails on which apps your child uses, what they download, and even their total time spent on the MG. This allows you to see exactly what your child is doing and set boundaries and limits as needed. It is a great tool to help teach your child responsibility.

The PlayMG comes pre-loaded with lots of popular games and apps. Included are top EA Games like Need for Speed, Hot Pursuit, and NBA Jam. It also includes Slice It, Swing Shot, Homerun Battle2, Tiny Farm, Tower Defense, 9 Innings Baseball, Super Action Hero and Derby Days. It also includes Proprietary MG Origins Avatar System: as gamers use the MG, they gain points, customize and unlock the origin story of their own personal gaming companion.

Other Info

Only certain Mg’s come with chargers. At first I thought it was an oversight but after doing some reading the reason behind this is pretty simple.

PlayMG understands that most of us have old USB chargers laying around and the MG uses these for charging. Since my husband and I are both Android phone users our cell phone chargers work to charge the MG. Any standard micro USB charger from Radio Shack, Walmart, or even your local drug store will work to charge your MG.

There is a Software Update going live today. Here are some helpful steps to update your PlayMG.
