After the big success of our Christmas Trophies we decided to go really big and make them again for the upcoming Pinewood Derby. This is our second Derby and we learned a lot from last year. I’m excited to see how his car does this year.
The thing I love most about the trophies is that you can make these for no matter what event. We have a family game day 4 times a year with the big one on New Years Eve. The winner of the NYE game night wins the biggest trophy for the year. After the success of the Pinewood Derby trophies we are going to make our own game night trophies.
DIY Pinewood Derby Trophies
Now back to the DIY Pinewood Derby trophies. These took a couple of days from start to finish and a few trips to the store but I love them so much more than a trophy we could have had bought.
You will need a base (we use 3/4 inch MDF that my husband laminated).
Gold spray paint
Various size cans
Dowels
Cars to go on top.
First you want to figure out the order you will put your cans on the base. Once you are happy with that, you can use a hole saw to cut a hole in each can for the dowel or simple stack them.
We went the dowel method to give these a little more height. The dowel was super glued to the base and then the cans were added and glued into place. A small bit of glue around where the can meets the dowel and where the cans touch each others adds plenty of stability.
Once this is dried you attach your car. Super glue again works wonders.
Then it is time to paint. We taped off the base and spray painted the entire thing in gold.
We added some glitter star stickers as decoration to some. A couple photos of racing cars to the larger cans helped to break up the cans. And our local trophy shop made us the plates for the front for only $5 each.
The details turned out amazingly and I am excited to see the boys faces when they see the trophies.
